Hoping to reignite a two-decade-old cold case, San Diego homicide detectives Thursday asked the public for any new information about the suspects who killed two men 20 years ago this week in the Mt. Hope neighborhood. Bryan Sean Carter and Vernon David Bownes were shot and killed Dec. 17, 1997, while sitting at a picnic table in the front yard of a home in the 200 block of Francis Street, San Diego police homicide Lt. Mike Holden said. Both men were shot in the head and died at the scene.

Three people, including two young children, were killed in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 12 west of Lodi in which both vehicles were believed to be speeding, according to the California Highway Patrol. A 55-year-old man from Woodbridge was driving his Mercedes east on Highway 12 near Little Potato Slough Road just after 9 p.m. Saturday. The driver was going well over the posted 55 mph speed limit, officers said.
A driver died early Thursday morning after an accident with a FedEx truck on Interstate 880 near the Oakland Coliseum. All southbound lanes were closed after the 3 a.m. crash. Investigators say that the Fed Ex big rig crashed into one car. Paramedics and firefighters tried to save the driver of the car, to no avail, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Matt Hamer.
2 men sought in Arleta shooting
Five people were arrested after allegedly burglarizing vehicles of residents who stayed in Oxnard after leaving their homes during the Thomas Fire, police said. The incidents occurred sometime during the night of Dec. 5 as the massive Thomas Fire raged through Ventura County, according to KTLA. Oxnard police said two black Suburbans parked in the 3700 block Dunkirk Drive were broken into and personal belongings were stolen.
An 18-year-old City Heights woman suffered life-threatening injuries Wednesday when an acquaintance stabbed her during an argument in the victim’s bedroom, police reported. The assault took place about 10 a.m. at an apartment in the 3700 block of Van Dyke Avenue, according to San Diego police.
